Watch: Here’s What Happens When You Create a Wild Pond
Overview
Amazing things happen when you create a wild pond. It’s one of the best features for attracting wildlife and balancing the ecosystem.
The science and other stuff to know
Wild ponds are effective artificial habitats you can create to help wildlife and the environment. A well-designed and maintained wildlife pond is a haven for all sorts of animals, plants, and birds.
Typically, they support nature and allow natural migrations of species such as amphibians, reptiles, and mammals, as well as the survival of many invertebrates and insects. They also act as natural food and water sources for many animals.
YouTuber Stefano Ianiro built a wildlife pond near his residence to try and help local wildlife. And after a few months, the pond had transformed a patch of grass into a healthy, thriving ecosystem.
According to Ianiro, the pond had attracted species like beetle backswimmers and pond skimmers. Birds were even coming down to the pond to hydrate and bathe. Also, several flogs and insects started breeding.
Sharing a video of his project, Ianiro adds:
“Eastern cottontails were forging on the plants, birds were singing, hummingbirds were zipping around, and even got my first video of a secretive species: the American woodcock.”
